Deceived (1991)
The murder of a museum curator places art dealer Jack Saunders under suspicion for selling forged treasures to museums. When Jack suddenly dies in a car crash, his wife Adrienne tries to discover what he did on her own. She finds that she knew little about the man she was married to. The more she learns about her husband's possible illegal activities and double life, the more she places her daughter, and herself, in grave danger.
What people think about Deceived
Deceived is the kind of sleek, adult thriller that hooks you with an everyday comfort—marriage, work, a child’s bedtime routine—and then quietly pulls the floor out from under it. Goldie Hawn is terrific in a role that lets her trade sunny charm for steely, lived-in resolve, and Damian Harris directs with a patient confidence that turns small discoveries into real, tightening dread. The movie’s pleasures aren’t in shock value but in the creeping realization that the person you trusted most might be a carefully curated story, and it builds to stretches of suspense that feel cleanly engineered and satisfyingly nerve-racking. If you want a modern, twisty, ultra-violent ride, this isn’t that; but if you’re in the mood for diverting, well-made tension with a classic early-’90s vibe, it’s absolutely worth your time.
Deceived wants to be a glossy, grown-up “my spouse was a stranger” thriller, with Goldie Hawn carrying the panic and determination of a woman piecing together a double life. The problem is the plot plays like it’s making things up as it goes, leaning on coincidences and logic gaps that can make the suspense feel more silly than scary, especially as it barrels toward a pretty far-fetched finale. If you need tight, believable twists and a smart mystery, this will likely test your patience. But if you’re in the mood for early-’90s domestic thriller comfort food—handsome production, steady pacing, and Hawn doing sincere work—it can still pass the time.
