Once Upon a Crime (1992)
On their way to Monte Carlo, Monaco, Marilyn and her husband, Neil, meet several other married couples, including Julian and Phoebe, who are traveling with a lost dog they plan to return to its wealthy owner for a large reward. But, when the dog's mistress is murdered, the travelers become the prime suspects, and Inspector Bonnard is determined to track them all down.
What people think about Once Upon a Crime
Once Upon a Crime is a glossy, breezy Monte Carlo caper that plays like a postcard mystery with a mischievous grin—sunlit casinos, fancy hotels, and a murder investigation that keeps tripping over human weakness. The real pleasure is watching a terrific comic lineup—especially John Candy’s warm, wonderfully flustered presence—bounce off Jim Belushi and Cybill Shepherd as suspicion ricochets from one couple to the next. It doesn’t aim for hard-edged noir or airtight whodunit logic so much as a light, gossipy tangle of motives, misunderstandings, and charmingly ridiculous behavior, with just enough mystery to keep you leaning in. If you’re in the mood for a low-stakes, mildly risqué, star-driven ‘90s comedy with a crime-story engine, it’s an easy, likable evening; if you want a truly tense thriller, you may find it more cute than gripping.
Once Upon a Crime wants to be a breezy, Monte Carlo-set whodunit where a stacked cast bounces through misunderstandings, slapstick, and a cute “lost dog” hook. The problem is the mystery is thin and the comedy often lands with a thud, so it feels less like a clever caper and more like famous people killing time between set pieces. John Candy brings some warmth and the Riviera backdrop is pleasant, but the writing and direction don’t give the ensemble enough sharp material to justify the runtime. If you’re craving a tight, witty mystery-comedy, this will likely frustrate you; if you just want low-stakes ‘90s fluff with mild adult innuendo and occasional chuckles, you might tolerate it.
