Cadence (1990)

Cadence is special because it turns a familiar “military prison” setup into something sharper and more human, using the stockade as a pressure cooker for pride, prejudice, and unlikely solidarity. Martin Sheen directs with a steady hand, letting tension build through character rather than spectacle, and the film finds room for wry humor that makes the harder moments land with extra sting. Charlie Sheen brings restless defiance without turning his soldier into a cartoon, while Laurence Fishburne and the ensemble give the barracks a lived-in authenticity that keeps the drama grounded and quietly provocative. It’s a spare, talky movie that won’t satisfy viewers hunting for big action beats, but if you like performance-driven dramas with moral bite, it’s an easy one to root for.

Cadence wants to be a gritty, socially conscious prison drama about solidarity and standing up to institutional racism, and you can see the intent in its basic setup and a few charged confrontations. The problem is it often plays like a made-for-TV message movie: the script feels unfocused, the emotional beats don’t land with much force, and the tone wobbles between tough realism and broad melodrama. Period details can feel a bit off, which makes the whole thing less immersive than it needs to be. If you’re mainly here for Laurence Fishburne’s presence and the Sheens’ earnestness, there’s something to watch, but if you want a sharp, authentic, hard-hitting prison film, this may come off bland and derivative.
