What people think about Billy Bathgate
Billy Bathgate is one of those gangster films that doesn’t just recreate the 1930s—it lets you breathe its cigarette smoke and feel the seduction of easy money and dangerous mentorship. Robert Benton stages the rise of a street-smart kid with a novelist’s eye for detail, wrapping the story in handsome period polish and a sense of bustling scale that makes every nightclub, courtroom, and backroom feel lived-in. The real magnet, though, is Dustin Hoffman’s Dutch Schultz: charming, volcanic, oddly funny, and terrifying in the way only a man who believes his own myth can be, with Nicole Kidman adding a cool, luminous counterpoint. It’s not as relentlessly propulsive as some crime classics and it doesn’t shy away from violence or adult content, but if you want a richly atmospheric mob tale that’s as much about allure as it is about menace, this one is easy to fall into.
Billy Bathgate wants to be a coming-of-age crime tale where a street-smart kid gets seduced by the glamour and menace of Dutch Schultz’s world, with a dash of doomed romance on the side. The problem is that it often plays like gangster highlights without the spark: the pacing drifts, the emotional beats land softly, and the central performance doesn’t give you enough pull to care when loyalties start to shift. Dustin Hoffman brings some twitchy unpredictability and Nicole Kidman has presence, but the film still feels oddly inert for a story with this much danger and betrayal. If you’re craving the momentum and character heat of the best mob movies, you may leave bored; if you’re okay with a handsomely made, low-voltage period crime drama, it might just pass the time.
