Vital Signs earns its pulse not from melodrama, but from the intimate, lived-in way it watches young doctors-in-training discover who they are when the stakes finally become real. Marisa Silver gives the hospital corridors and late-night study sessions a restless, romantic energy, letting ambition, attraction, and fear of failure mingle in the same breath. Adrian Pasdar and Diane Lane anchor the film with performances that feel immediate and human, while the ensemble makes the friendships and rivalries snap with recognizable truth. It’s not a glossy medical soap or a hard-edged procedural, but if you like character-driven dramas where the pressure cooker reveals both tenderness and ego, this one is an engaging, quietly compelling watch.

Vital Signs is clearly aiming to be a glossy, character-driven snapshot of med school pressure—career ambition, messy romance, and the life-or-death stakes of the hospital colliding at once. The problem is it often plays like a checklist of familiar beats: rivalries, love triangles, and “prove yourself” scenes that you can see coming from a mile away, with not quite enough spark or specificity to make it feel distinctive. If you want sharp writing, fresh medical realism, or a truly gripping ensemble drama, this may feel flat and overconstructed. Still, there’s a watchable early-’90s vibe and a solid young cast (especially Diane Lane and Laura San Giacomo) that can make it a decent background pick if you’re in the mood for straightforward, low-risk melodrama.
