Mountains of the Moon is that rare historical adventure that feels both vast in landscape and intimate in human stakes, turning a famous expedition into a gripping study of friendship, pride, and obsession. Bob Rafelson shoots the journey with a sober, tactile realism—mud, fever, hunger, and hard-won awe—so the “epic” never becomes postcard pretty, and the danger never feels like spectacle for its own sake. Patrick Bergin and Iain Glen make Burton and Speke compellingly human: brave, brilliant, and increasingly haunted by what ambition does to loyalty, while Richard E. Grant adds a sharp note of civilized menace back in London. It isn’t a breezy crowd-pleaser—there’s some nudity, rough violence, and a deliberately measured pace—but if you want an intelligent, absorbing film that respects history and still delivers the sweep of discovery, this is well worth the trek.

Mountains of the Moon is clearly aiming for a classic, prestige-style adventure: big landscapes, historical stakes, and a slow-burn portrait of two men whose friendship curdles into rivalry. The problem is that it often feels like it’s trudging rather than driving—handsomely mounted, yes, but with a sprawling structure and not much dramatic snap, so the suffering and setbacks can start to feel repetitive instead of gripping. If you’re expecting a punchy, high-tension expedition thriller, this may test your patience, especially once the story shifts into talky, pride-fueled fallout back in London. Still, the performances (especially the central duo) and the sense of place can reward viewers who like measured, old-school historical dramas more than adrenaline.
