Love at Large (1990)
Inept private investigator Harry Dobbs meets vampish new client Miss Dolan, who wants him to follow her abusive lover. But Dobbs sets about tailing a different person entirely – a mysterious character leading a double life. Harry, however, discovers that he himself is being followed by a distaff gumshoe.
What people think about Love at Large
Love at Large is the kind of movie that feels like it stepped out of a smoky noir dream and decided to flirt with comedy instead of wallowing in despair—a knowingly off-kilter detective romance where the mood is the main event. Alan Rudolph wraps the story in gorgeous stylization: sharp production design, sly costumes, and music that makes every shadow and sidelong glance feel like part of a private joke. Tom Berenger plays the gumshoe as charmingly out of his depth, and the film’s pleasures come from watching him navigate a maze of suspicious people and shifting identities while the movie keeps winking at the genre. If you want a straightforward mystery with clean answers, this may feel deliberately strange, but if you’re in the mood for an eccentric, atmospheric neo-noir that runs on vibe, wit, and misdirection, it’s a minor gem worth discovering.
Love at Large is clearly aiming for a glossy, throwback noir-romance where the mystery is secondary to mood, banter, and a wink at old Hollywood archetypes. The problem is it often plays like a parody that isn’t sure what it’s parodying, so the plot twists and jokes can feel self-conscious and oddly weightless rather than sharp or suspenseful. If you need a mystery with real stakes, momentum, or bite, this may come off as meandering and more pleased with its style than its story. Still, if you enjoy Alan Rudolph’s offbeat rhythms and can settle in for a dreamy, quirky vibe with a game cast, there’s a certain charm in watching it drift.
