Harry Hook shoots the tropical scenery with such lush, sunlit beauty that the encroaching dread feels even sharper, and the film’s pace stays taut as leadership, loyalty, and fear collide in ways that feel uncomfortably plausible. Balthazar Getty, Chris Furrh, and Danuel Pipoly give the story a grounded intensity, making the boys’ shifting alliances and escalating conflict hit with real weight rather than melodrama. It’s a dark, violent ride—definitely not for everyone—but if you can handle an R-rated survival thriller that stares straight at human nature, it’s hard to shake and even harder to forget.

Harry Hook’s Lord of the Flies clearly wants to be a grim survival thriller about how quickly “civilized” kids can turn feral when the rules vanish, and the basic setup still has real bite. The problem is the execution: it often feels blunt and literal where the story needs dread and symbolism, with pacing that can drag and scenes that play more like a checklist of plot beats than an escalating psychological collapse. If you love the novel’s nuance and atmosphere, this version may frustrate you with how heavy-handed and straightforward it gets. Still, if you’re after a darker, R-rated island breakdown story with some tense moments and you can accept it as a loose adaptation, it can be a serviceable watch.
