Heaven and Earth is the kind of historical war epic that earns its grandeur the old-fashioned way: with sweeping landscapes, bold color, and battle scenes so massive you can practically feel the ground shake under the cavalry. Haruki Kadokawa stages feudal Japan as a living tapestry of banners, armor, and ritual, then throws it into motion with a confidence that turns spectacle into storytelling. At its center is a tense, magnetic rivalry between two warlords—one younger and more principled, the other ruthlessly seasoned—that gives the film a brooding, operatic pulse rather than mere pageantry. If you’re looking for intimate character psychology above all else, it may feel more monumental than nuanced, but if you want a visceral, visually striking samurai epic that takes scale seriously, this one is hard to resist.

Heaven and Earth is clearly aiming to be a sweeping, old-school samurai epic, built around the legendary rivalry between Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen and staged with real visual ambition. The problem is that the film often feels more like a historical pageant than a gripping drama: the characters can come off thin, the emotional stakes don’t land as strongly as they should, and the pacing drifts between set pieces.
