The Guardian (1990)
Phil and Kate select the winsome young Camilla as a live-in nanny for their newborn child, but the seemingly lovely Camilla is not what she appears to be...
What people think about The Guardian
What makes The Guardian special is the way William Friedkin turns a familiar domestic comfort—the live-in nanny—into a slow, unnerving invasion of your safest spaces, shot with the kind of visual authority that makes even quiet moments feel watched. The film’s power lies in its atmosphere: eerie natural settings, sly zigzag camera angles, and colored lighting that keep suspense simmering until it snaps into sudden, nasty jolts. Jenny Seagrove plays Camilla with a poised, storybook calm that’s all the more chilling because the movie never lets you fully relax around her. Fair warning: it’s a grim, creature-feature-flavored thriller with some nasty violence and peril involving a baby, but if you like your horror stylish, strange, and confidently directed, this one has teeth.
The Guardian is clearly trying to mash up domestic paranoia (the “perfect nanny” who isn’t) with a pagan, nature-strikes-back fairy tale, and William Friedkin stages a few moments with real bite. The problem is the story often feels like it’s running on dream logic without the atmosphere to make that satisfying, so the tension leaks out and the leaps in character behavior can come off more silly than sinister. If you need smart plotting, consistent rules, or dread that builds steadily, this one will probably test your patience—especially given the heavy “baby in peril” angle and some nasty violence. Still, if you’re in the mood for an oddball early-90s supernatural thriller with a memorable central performance and a couple of grim set pieces, you might find it enjoyably weird rather than genuinely scary.
