Ghost (1990)

What makes Ghost special is how effortlessly it turns a high-concept afterlife premise into something intimate, funny, and genuinely moving—an old-fashioned crowd-pleaser with real feeling in its bones. Jerry Zucker keeps the tone buoyant even as the story leans into suspense and mystery, letting the romance land with a sincerity that doesn’t feel sugary. Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore give the film its emotional heartbeat, while Whoopi Goldberg steals scenes with a performance that’s both hilariously grounded and unexpectedly tender. If you’re allergic to earnest, big-studio sentimentality you may find it a touch unabashed, but if you want a wildly watchable blend of love story, supernatural intrigue, and catharsis, Ghost still delivers.

Ghost is aiming for a big, crowd-pleasing blend of romance, supernatural mystery, and a touch of thriller tension, and it mostly succeeds by leaning hard into heartfelt emotion. If you need tight plotting and consistent tone, the story can feel a bit simplistic and the pacing lumpy, with a few “we have to do this now” action beats that don’t always mesh with the love story. Some of the effects have aged into occasional goofiness, which can pull you out if you’re not willing to meet it halfway. Still, the central performances (and the movie’s willingness to be sincerely sentimental) are strong enough that if you like classic, earnest romantic fantasy, you’ll probably forgive the rough edges.
