Frankenhooker (1990)

Frankenhooker is the kind of midnight-movie lightning bolt that dares you to keep up: a gleefully tasteless, surprisingly crafty mash-up of mad-scientist sci-fi, splattery horror, and stand-up-level absurdity that only Frank Henenlotter would push this far with such confidence. It plays like a warped love story filtered through grimy New York neon, where every scene seems designed to top the last in outrageous invention, and the laughs come from how committed the movie is to its own lunatic logic. Patty Mullen gives the chaos a weirdly memorable center, and the film’s practical gore and comic timing have that hand-made, anything-can-happen energy cult fans live for. Fair warning: it’s raunchy, drug-soaked, and cheerfully offensive by design, but if you want a horror-comedy that goes for broke and actually gets there, this one’s hard to forget.

Frankenhooker is trying to be a gleefully trashy, B-movie Frankenstein riff—part horror, part sex comedy, part DIY mad-scientist farce—and it commits to that low-rent, midnight-movie energy without apology. The problem is that the “joke” is mostly the same one over and over: sleaze, body-part gags, and gross-out effects pushed so hard they can drown out any real wit or charm. If you’re not comfortable with exploitation vibes, drug-fueled set pieces, and a story that treats sex work as a prop for shock laughs, this will feel more grimy than funny. That said, if you like deliberately tasteless cult oddities with practical effects and a cartoonish tone, it’s exactly the kind of movie that dares you to either bail out or cackle.
