Evil Toons (1992)

Evil Toons is the kind of gloriously disreputable late-night oddity that knows exactly what it is: a cheeky horror-comedy where sleaze, slapstick, and splattery mayhem collide with the absurdity of a hand-drawn demon running loose in the real world. Fred Olen Ray leans into the B-movie vibe with a wink, letting the haunted-house atmosphere and the cartoon logic play off each other until the whole thing feels like an R-rated Saturday-morning nightmare. David Carradine brings a welcome touch of gravitas amid the chaos, while the film’s real charm is its commitment to being silly, fast, and cheerfully over-the-top rather than “scary” in any conventional sense. If you’re allergic to camp, nudity, or knowingly cheap effects, this won’t convert you—but if you want irreverent, cheesy fun with a mean little grin, it’s a blast.

Evil Toons is clearly aiming for a sleazy, goofy mash-up of haunted-house horror and Saturday-morning cartoon mayhem, with Fred Olen Ray leaning hard into low-budget B-movie camp. The problem is the big “hook” doesn’t really land: the animation is rough, the pacing is slack, and the comedy-horror balance often feels like it’s stalling until the next bit of nudity or bloodletting. David Carradine adds a touch of weary charm and there are a few enjoyably trashy, midnight-movie moments, but if you’re expecting clever satire, inventive kills, or even decent cartoon integration, this will feel like a bargain-bin curiosity. It’s best suited to viewers who actively enjoy cheap ’90s VHS schlock and can laugh with it rather than at it.
