Child’s Play 2 is the rare slasher sequel that doesn’t just coast on a familiar hook—it sharpens it, turns up the pace, and delivers a lean, nasty little thrill ride with real momentum. John Lafia keeps the tone brisk and mean-spirited in the best way, surrounding Andy’s foster-home instability with a dark, anxious atmosphere that makes Chucky’s appearances feel like a fuse being lit rather than a routine jump-scare. Brad Dourif’s voice work is still the secret weapon: funny, furious, and unsettling enough to make a plastic grin feel personal. If you’re squeamish about frequent gore or don’t like your horror with a streak of cruel humor, it may not be your toy box—but if you want energetic, old-school scares that build to a terrific factory-set finale, this one earns its reputation.

Child’s Play 2 is clearly trying to double down on the first film’s hook: a meaner, faster, more relentless cat-and-mouse slasher built around Chucky’s nasty personality and a bigger, more “set-piece” finale. If you’re hoping for fresh ideas or smarter plotting, though, this one can feel like a loud rerun—same basic beats, thinner character work, and a harsher, more cynical tone that leans into cruelty. The violence is frequent and sometimes ugly rather than fun, so if gore and child-in-peril tension aren’t your thing, it’ll be an endurance test.
