Bad Influence (1990)
Wimpy young executive Michael is about to get pulverized by a jealous boyfriend in a bar when a handsome, mysterious stranger steps in—and then disappears. Later that night, Michael runs into a stranger on a pier, who wheedles his way into Michael's life and turns it upside down.
What people think about Bad Influence
Bad Influence is the kind of sleek, seductive thriller that gets under your skin not with cheap shocks, but with the slow, sickening pleasure of watching a life get rearranged by the wrong kind of charisma. Curtis Hanson directs with a cool, somber control that makes Los Angeles feel like a glossy trap, and he gives James Spader room to play insecurity as a real, human weakness rather than a punchline. Rob Lowe is disarmingly magnetic as the stranger who offers liberation that curdles into control, and the film’s tension comes from how plausibly one bad friendship can start to feel like a new identity. It’s not for viewers who shy away from adult sexual content and a decadent, morally queasy vibe, but if you like psychological thrillers that feel stylish, intimate, and relentlessly tightening, this one delivers.
Bad Influence wants to be a slick yuppie-nightmare thriller about a timid guy seduced into becoming someone darker, and to its credit it moves fast and lets Rob Lowe weaponize charm in a genuinely unsettling way. The problem is it often feels like a polished remix of better “stranger upends your life” stories, and the later twists don’t land with the punch the setup promises. If you’re hoping for a deeply original psychological spiral or a truly satisfying payoff, you may find it more stylish than substantial. Still, if you like glossy early-’90s L.A. menace, James Spader’s nervous energy, and a creep factor that’s more manipulative than gory, it can be an entertaining cautionary ride.
