Arachnophobia (1990)
A large spider from the jungles of South America is accidentally transported in a crate with a dead body to America where it mates with a local spider. Soon after, the residents of a small California town disappear as the result of spider bites from the deadly spider offspring. It's up to a couple of doctors with the help of an insect exterminator to annihilate these eight legged freaks.
What people think about Arachnophobia
Arachnophobia is that rare creature feature that understands the delicious fun of being scared: it makes you squirm, then lets you laugh at yourself for squirming. Frank Marshall directs with a tight, playful control, turning everyday small-town spaces into nerve-jangling minefields while keeping the rhythm brisk and crowd-pleasing. Jeff Daniels grounds the chaos with likable, relatable anxiety, and John Goodman storms in like a one-man comedy demolition crew, giving the movie its biggest bursts of cheerfully reckless energy. If you truly can’t handle spiders, this may be a hard pass—but if you’re on the fence, it’s one of the most entertaining “I can’t look, but I can’t stop watching” rides horror-comedy has to offer.
Arachnophobia is trying to be a crowd-pleasing “spooky but safe” creature feature, mixing jump-scare spider antics with sitcom-level humor and a clean studio sheen. The problem is that it often feels mechanically assembled: the characters are thin, the suspense peaks in bursts rather than building, and if you want truly primal, skin-crawling horror, this may come off as too mild. On the flip side, if you hate gore and don’t want bleak horror, it’s a surprisingly watchable gateway movie, with John Goodman injecting real personality and the spider set-pieces delivering effective, short shocks. Skip it if you’re after sharp writing or genuinely terrifying horror; try it if you want a light horror-comedy that won’t ruin your sleep but might make you check your shoes.
