Air America (1990)

Air America is the kind of swaggering, skybound romp that turns wartime chaos into a mischievous adventure, powered by the irresistible odd-couple chemistry of Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. It zips between wisecracks and danger with the breezy confidence of a movie that knows you came to watch planes do impossible things and pilots make even worse decisions, and it delivers on both with punchy action and terrific flying sequences. Air America is clearly aiming for a rowdy “war is crazy” adventure-comedy, mixing daredevil flying, buddy banter, and a peek at CIA-era moral murkiness in Laos. The problem is it can’t pick a lane: the tone lurches between slapstick and grim subject matter, and the script feels scattered enough that the stakes and satire never really land. If you’re hoping for sharp comedy, coherent plotting, or any kind of thoughtful historical take, this will likely feel like a noisy mess that wastes a fascinating premise. Still, there are a few fun aviation set pieces and an easygoing charm from the leads, so it may work as a casual, brain-off watch if you can tolerate the confusion and tonal whiplash.
