The Wizard (1989)

Beneath the candy-colored fun and tournament hype, it carries a surprisingly tender undercurrent about a family trying to understand a wounded child, which gives the movie more heart than its reputation suggests. Todd Holland keeps the vibe brisk and crowd-pleasing—part road movie, part hangout comedy, part earnest drama—so even the detours feel like snapshots from a simpler era. It’s undeniably heavy on product placement and occasionally rough in its language about disability, but if you can meet it where it is, you’ll find a cult charmer that’s easy to enjoy and hard not to grin at.

The Wizard is clearly trying to be a kid-friendly road-trip adventure with a heartfelt core about family grief, using video games as the engine to keep things fun and accessible. The problem is it often feels less like a story and more like a loud, shiny Nintendo advertisement, with thin character work, predictable beats, and sentiment that can come off as pushy rather than earned. Some of the language and the way the film treats Jimmy’s disability and trauma can also feel dated and uncomfortable, even if the movie means well.
