Warlock (1989)

Warlock is the kind of genre cocktail that feels oddly rare: a horror-fantasy chase movie with real momentum, a mischievous sense of humor, and a villain so charismatic you almost hate how much fun he’s having. Steve Miner keeps the pace brisk and the tone playfully wicked, letting the 17th-century severity of a witch-hunter collide with sunlit, everyday 1980s Los Angeles in ways that are both eerie and surprisingly funny. Julian Sands radiates sleek malevolence, while Richard E. Grant gives the pursuer a wonderfully period-textured intensity that makes the whole thing pop, and Lori Singer grounds the madness with a relatable, human stake in the fight. It’s not for the squeamish—there are a few nasty bursts of gore—but if you want an entertaining, high-concept horror ride that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still delivering the goods, this one casts a strong spell.

Warlock is clearly trying to mash up a witch-trial chase movie with an ‘80s fish-out-of-water thriller, and the premise is strong enough to keep you curious. The problem is it often feels like a lean B-movie sketch of a bigger idea: the effects are hit-or-miss, the pacing can be episodic, and the horror/fantasy/action blend never fully gels into one satisfying tone. If you’re looking for genuinely scary set pieces or polished supernatural spectacle, you may find it a bit cheap and familiar, with shocky moments doing more work than atmosphere. Still, Julian Sands brings slick, nasty charisma and Richard E. Grant adds earnest energy, so if you enjoy scrappy late-’80s genre rides with a mean streak, it can be fun in a rough-around-the-edges way.
