Vampire's Kiss (1989)

Vampire’s Kiss is the kind of midnight movie that dares you to keep up: a sleek New York nightmare-comedy where the joke keeps curdling into something stranger, funnier, and more unsettling. Nicolas Cage gives one of the great go-for-broke performances, turning yuppie vanity and romantic desperation into a spiraling, blackly comic fever dream that’s impossible to forget. Director Robert Bierman keeps the vibe sharp and urban—part satirical crime story, part horror fantasia—so even when it’s tasteless, it’s tasteless with purpose and panache. Vampire’s Kiss is trying to mash up yuppie satire, horror, and a mental-breakdown character study, with Nicolas Cage going all-in as a man who may or may not be turning into a vampire. The problem is it’s less a clever descent than a loud, chaotic spiral that can feel incoherent and, frankly, ugly—especially in how it treats the women around him, with harassment and sexual violence played in a way many viewers will find grim rather than insightful. If you want a traditional vampire movie, a tight psychological thriller, or anyone remotely sympathetic to hold onto, this will likely be a miserable watch.
