UHF (1989)
The eccentric new manager of a UHF television channel tries to save the station from financial ruin with an odd array of programming.
What people think about UHF
UHF is a joyous, anything-goes celebration of creative misfits, a comedy that feels like someone handed “Weird Al” Yankovic the keys to a TV station and told him to follow every ridiculous impulse. Instead of building laughs from plot mechanics, it runs on anarchic sketch energy—rapid-fire parodies, homemade-show ingenuity, and a surprisingly warm underdog spirit as a broke little channel fights back with sheer weirdness. Jay Levey keeps the vibe bright and scrappy, and Michael Richards, in particular, turns manic innocence into an art form without the movie ever turning mean. It’s not for everyone—some gags are deliberately broad and a little juvenile—but if you’re in the mood for freewheeling satire and lovingly dumb absurdity, it’s the kind of cult comedy that reminds you how fun it is when a movie commits completely to being silly.
UHF is trying to be a live-action cartoon and a love letter to low-rent local TV, basically a delivery system for “Weird Al” to fire off sketch after sketch at full volume. If you need a tight plot or jokes that build and pay off, this can feel sloppy and thin, with a lot of disconnected parodies that land unevenly and sometimes look like they’re trying a bit too hard. The slapstick gets aggressively broad (and occasionally gory), so anyone sensitive to cartoon violence or tasteless throwaway bits may find it more exhausting than funny. But if you’re in the mood for deliberately dumb, rapid-fire silliness and enjoy Al’s goofy charm (plus an unhinged Michael Richards), it’s a cult oddball that can still hit the spot.
