Stepfather 2 (1989)

Stepfather 2 is the kind of lean, nasty little thriller that turns suburban comfort into a pressure cooker, and it works largely because Terry O’Quinn again makes charm feel like a loaded weapon. Director Jeff Burr keeps the movie moving with slick, workmanlike confidence, letting tension build in everyday spaces—living rooms, counseling sessions, friendly gatherings—until you’re watching every smile for the crack in the mask. It’s suspenseful in a clean, efficient way, a sequel that understands continuity isn’t just plot bookkeeping but the return of a very specific, very chilling presence. If you want elevated, art-house horror this isn’t it, but if you’re on the fence about a smart, watchable late-’80s psycho-in-the-suburbs ride, this one earns its time.

Stepfather 2 is clearly trying to cash in on the first film’s creepy “perfect family” nightmare by dropping Jerry Blake into a new suburban setup and letting the mask slip again. The problem is it plays less like a tense psychological thriller and more like a routine, slick slasher sequel, with familiar beats and kills that rarely feel surprising or genuinely unsettling. If you loved the original for its grounded, slow-burn dread and character-driven menace, this one may feel inconsequential and a bit on autopilot. The main reason to watch is Terry O’Quinn still bringing conviction to the role and a few enjoyably trashy late-80s thriller moments, but don’t expect it to justify its own existence.
