Society (1990)
Bill Whitney is worried that he is different to his sister and parents. They mix with other upper-class people while Bill is more down to earth. Even his girlfriend seems a bit odd. All is revealed when Bill returns home to find a party in full swing.
What people think about Society
Society is special because it takes a familiar teen paranoia—“my family is hiding something”—and inflates it into a wickedly funny, genuinely unsettling satire about wealth, belonging, and the price of getting invited inside the velvet rope. Brian Yuzna keeps the vibe slick and sunlit on the surface, then lets a slow, creeping unease seep into every conversation and smile, until you’re laughing and squirming at the same time. And when the film finally stops teasing and shows its hand, it delivers one of the most audacious practical-effects finales of the era: not just gross for gross’s sake, but grotesque in a way that lands the movie’s class-war punchline with unforgettable force. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s intense body horror and sexually charged shock—but if you like horror that’s imaginative, meanly clever, and committed to going all the way, Society is a cult classic you’ll understand the moment it ends.
Society is trying to skewer rich-kid privilege with a paranoid Beverly Hills mystery that eventually detonates into full-on body-horror absurdity. The problem is you have to sit through a lot of slow, uneven setup and thin character work before it earns that payoff, and the satire can feel more smug than sharp. When it finally goes there, it’s memorably gross, sexually warped, and effects-driven in a way that’ll delight fans of practical splatter but absolutely punish anyone squeamish or not in the mood for taboo-adjacent weirdness. If you want a tight horror mystery or clever social commentary, this may feel empty and self-important; if you can tolerate the drag for one infamous, no-holds-barred finale, it delivers a cult-grade shock.
