Shocker (1989)

Shocker is Wes Craven at his most gleefully unhinged: a nasty little bolt of late-’80s horror that turns the electric chair into a launchpad for pure, popcorn-fueled imagination. It’s suspenseful and surprisingly stylish, surging from slasher dread into surreal, nightmare logic with the kind of sick humor that winks at you even as it goes for the throat. Mitch Pileggi’s Horace Pinker is a larger-than-life monster you love to hate, and the movie’s restless energy keeps finding new ways to jolt the story forward without ever feeling polite or predictable. Fair warning: the violence is genuinely severe and the tone is proudly trashy, but if you want a fun, mean, high-voltage Craven ride, this one delivers.
