Scandal (1989)

Scandal is special because it turns a notorious political headline into a vivid, human story, seen through the eyes of Stephen Ward, and John Hurt makes him feel heartbreakingly alive—charming, clever, and increasingly cornered. Michael Caton-Jones recreates early-’60s Britain with a glossy, restless energy: smoky clubs, posh drawing rooms, and the uneasy thrill of a society pretending it isn’t changing. Joanne Whalley and Bridget Fonda bring spark and steel to the women at the center, so the film plays less like a history lesson and more like a seductive, doomed dance between desire, class, and power.
