Renegades (1989)

Renegades is the kind of scrappy late-’80s action-thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go, powered by a terrific odd-couple pairing: Kiefer Sutherland’s battered, cornered undercover cop and Lou Diamond Phillips’ driven, quietly intense avenger. Director Jack Sholder keeps the story moving with real momentum—dirty-cop paranoia, bruising fistfights, and pulpy set pieces that feel happily committed to their own speed and swagger—while still giving the two leads room to earn an uneasy respect. The violence and profanity come heavy, so if you’re hoping for a smart crime story with nuance (or a respectful, well-developed Native American angle), this can feel more like a loud genre mash-up than a satisfying thriller. Still, if you’re in the mood for late-’80s action grit and can tolerate some implausibility, the leads’ commitment and occasional momentum are the main reasons to stick around.
