Prancer (1989)

What makes Prancer special is how it treats a Christmas miracle like something that could happen on a cold, hard year—then lets wonder seep in anyway. John D. Hancock directs with a plainspoken sincerity that never winks at the audience, grounding the fantasy in the real anxieties of a struggling farm and a family still bruised by loss. Rebecca Harrell Tickell is terrific as Jessica, all fierce conviction and tenderness, while Sam Elliott gives her father a quiet, adult ache that makes the film resonate beyond the holiday trappings. It’s gentler than it sounds and genuinely moving, though if you’re looking for nonstop cheer or broad comedy, this one is more of a warm, steady glow than a sugar rush.

Prancer is aiming for old-fashioned Christmas sincerity: a kid’s unwavering belief colliding with adult money worries, grief, and the temptation to cash in on “miracles.” When it works, it’s because Sam Elliott grounds the film with real weariness and warmth, and the rural winter atmosphere feels genuinely cozy. But be warned: it leans hard into sentimentality, the pacing can feel meandering, and a couple of side threads (including a neighbor subplot) land like half-finished ideas rather than meaningful texture. If you want a brisk, joke-heavy holiday crowd-pleaser, this may test your patience; if you’re in the mood for a gentle, earnest tear-jerker with mild peril and a soft magical glow, it’s a perfectly serviceable seasonal watch.
