Parents (1989)

Parents is what happens when a picture-perfect 1950s suburb curdles into a bedtime story you can’t quite wake up from—equal parts wickedly funny and quietly horrifying, with Bob Balaban directing like a man who knows the scariest monsters wear aprons and smile for the neighbors. The film’s genius is its child’s-eye perspective: every hallway feels longer, every dinner table more oppressive, and every “normal” adult reassurance lands like a threat, all captured with an imaginatively composed, stylized look that keeps you unsettled even when you’re laughing. Randy Quaid and Mary Beth Hurt are terrific as the too-charming parents, playing domestic warmth as a kind of predation, while Sandy Dennis adds a nervy, off-kilter grace note that deepens the satire. If you like your horror with a sly grin and your comedy with a shiver underneath, this is a cult gem; if you’re squeamish about food-based dread, you may never look at a backyard grill the same way again.

Parents is clearly aiming for a twisted 1950s suburbia satire, filtering childhood dread through a darkly comic, cannibal-tinged horror lens. The problem is the tone keeps wobbling—too odd to be straight horror, too restrained to be funny—so it can feel like a string of unsettling moments without a satisfying narrative payoff. Character work is more archetypal than deep, which makes the social commentary land softly and the tension sometimes fizzle instead of building. Still, the period vibe is nicely queasy and the cast commits, so if you like slow-burn, off-kilter mood pieces more than coherent scares or sharp laughs, you may have a better time than most.
