The Package (1989)

The Package is the kind of grown-up action thriller they don’t make enough anymore: lean, smart, and driven by character instead of noise, with Andrew Davis staging suspense like a craftsman who knows exactly when to tighten the screws. Gene Hackman is terrific as a no-nonsense Green Beret forced to think on his feet, and Tommy Lee Jones brings a cool, unsettling edge that makes every encounter feel charged with danger. The film’s pleasure is in how efficiently it moves—airports, backrooms, city streets—always one step ahead of you without turning into a puzzle box, and it gives Joanna Cassidy real weight as more than just “the ex” in a crisis. It’s not for viewers looking for glossy spectacle or quippy heroics, but if you want a tightly wound political chase movie with brains, bite, and momentum, this one delivers.

The Package is clearly aiming for a slick, paranoid Cold War chase thriller where nobody’s identity is stable and the conspiracy keeps widening, and Andrew Davis knows how to stage movement and tension. The problem is the story often feels like it’s straining for “big” twists, so if you need plausibility and clean logic, you may find it preposterous and oddly heavy-footed, with villains who don’t always feel as sharp as the movie wants them to be. It’s also very much a product of its era, and the politics can come off dated rather than urgent. Still, Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones bring enough grit and presence to keep it watchable if you’re in the mood for an old-school, R-rated thriller that values momentum over credibility.
