What people think about Next of Kin
Next of Kin is that rare late-’80s action-thriller that feels both muscular and oddly soulful, a city-versus-holler collision where the gunfire has real emotional weight behind it. Patrick Swayze brings grounded conviction as a cop pulled between duty and blood, while Liam Neeson storms in with a fierce, unforgettable intensity that elevates the movie beyond standard revenge mechanics. Director John Irvin gives Chicago a gritty, lived-in atmosphere, letting the tension build until it finally erupts into a high-energy, genuinely memorable showdown. It’s not for viewers allergic to hard language and rough-and-tumble violence, but if you want a tough, satisfying genre ride with a surprisingly strong cast and a pulpy sense of momentum, this one delivers.
Next of Kin is clearly trying to be a gritty revenge thriller that pits big-city mob muscle against Appalachian family loyalty, and on paper the Swayze–Neeson pairing sounds like a winner. The problem is the script keeps reaching for “tough and intense” but often lands on implausible and oddly cartoonish, with plot turns that feel more like a dare than a believable escalation. If you need coherent crime logic and grounded character decisions, this will likely test your patience, especially once it leans hard into clan-vs-mob theatrics. Still, there’s a pulpy late-’80s energy to the action, and Neeson (plus a game supporting cast) brings more presence than the material really deserves—so it works best if you treat it as a loud, messy genre relic rather than a serious thriller.
