The Master (1992)

What people think about The Master
The Master is the kind of early-’90s action film that exists to let Jet Li move like lightning, and Tsui Hark frames him with the clear, full-body choreography that makes every kick and counter feel earned. Set against a scrappy Los Angeles backdrop, it has a pulpy, street-level vibe—part fish-out-of-water comedy, part old-school kung fu honor tale—building steadily toward a finale that’s pure crowd-pleasing catharsis. The story is straightforward, but that’s the point: it clears the runway for inventive fights, a charismatic rogue’s-gallery of opponents, and a climactic one-on-one showdown that delivers exactly what you came for. If you need deep character drama or subtle plotting, this may not be your stop, but if you want a lean showcase of Jet Li at full physical command, it’s an easy recommendation.
The Master is clearly trying to be a Jet Li showcase that mixes fish-out-of-water comedy, a “save the old master” storyline, and lots of street-level brawling in early-’90s Los Angeles. The problem is the connective tissue: the plot lurches from contrived setup to contrived setup, characters behave however the scene needs them to, and motivations can feel fuzzy enough that you may stop caring between fights. If you’re here for tight storytelling or Tsui Hark at his most inventive, this will likely feel like a scrappy, uneven vehicle that wastes some of Jet Li’s potential. If you can forgive the messy narrative for frequent martial-arts action and a few fun training/payoff moments, it can still work as disposable, rough-around-the-edges entertainment.
