Licence to Kill (1989)

Licence to Kill is the Bond film that dares to take its hero’s charm and aim it like a weapon: leaner, angrier, and more personal than the usual globe-trotting fantasy, with Timothy Dalton giving 007 a coiled intensity that feels genuinely dangerous. John Glen stages the action with a stuntman’s clarity and a thriller’s momentum, building from bruising close-quarters violence to one of the series’ most spectacular, white-knuckle vehicle chases. Robert Davi’s Franz Sanchez isn’t a cartoon megalomaniac but a cold, plausible predator, which makes every scene around his operation crackle with menace. If you prefer your Bond light and winking, this one’s tougher and darker—but if you want a sharp, propulsive revenge ride where the set pieces actually bite, it’s a standout worth your time.

Licence to Kill is trying to drag Bond out of the tux-and-witty-quips comfort zone and into a lean, personal revenge thriller, and on that level Timothy Dalton commits hard. The catch is it’s noticeably grimmer and more violent than the classic formula, with less escapist glamour and humor to cushion the nastiness, so if you want “fun Bond” this can feel like a joyless detour. The plot also leans on soapier crime-melodrama beats that don’t always land cleanly, even when the action is solid.
