Leviathan (1989)

Leviathan is the kind of slick, blue-collar sci‑fi horror ride they don’t make much anymore: a tight, pressure-cooker thriller where the ocean itself feels like a locked room and every creak of metal suggests something hungry on the other side. George P. Cosmatos keeps the pace brisk and the atmosphere thick, letting the deep-sea setting do half the work while Peter Weller and a game ensemble sell the camaraderie, panic, and grit with just the right B-movie swagger. It’s pulpy and proudly familiar in its 1980s creature-feature DNA, but it’s also genuinely effective when it leans into claustrophobia and nasty, practical body-horror. If you’re allergic to gore or you want subtle, elevated sci‑fi, this isn’t your dive—but if you want a fun, well-mounted underwater nightmare with personality, it’s an easy recommendation.

Leviathan is clearly trying to mash up deep-sea claustrophobia with glossy late-’80s creature-feature thrills, and on that level it delivers a salty, industrial atmosphere and a game Peter Weller anchoring the chaos. The problem is it wears its influences so loudly that you may feel like you’re watching a greatest-hits remix of better sci-fi horror, and once the monster stuff kicks in, the tension tends to flatten into routine attack beats. If you’re here for inventive plotting or genuinely surprising scares, this can feel pretty secondhand and a bit sluggish between effects moments. Still, if you just want wet, grimy production design, some nasty body-horror gags, and a straightforward “crew gets picked off” ride, it’s serviceable—just don’t expect it to be the next Alien.
