The Fly II (1989)

The Fly II is one of those rare sequels that knows exactly what it’s good at and leans in hard: a brisk, nervy sci-fi horror ride fueled by tragic curiosity and some gloriously gnarly practical effects. Chris Walas, a master of makeup and creature work, brings a tactile, squirm-inducing physicality that modern CGI can’t replicate, and the film’s clean corporate-lab setting gives the whole thing a cold, clinical dread that steadily tightens the screws. Eric Stoltz makes Martin Brundle more than a monster-in-waiting—there’s real intelligence and sadness under the surface, which makes the shocks land with extra bite. It’s not as thematically rich as Cronenberg’s The Fly, but if you want energetic pacing, rising tension, and old-school body-horror craftsmanship that earns its reputation, this is a seriously satisfying watch.

The Fly II is clearly trying to turn Cronenberg’s tragic body-horror into a faster, more conventional creature-feature, with a “corporate lab raises the monster” setup and a steady ramp-up of grotesque effects. The problem is it often feels like it’s going through sequel motions: the characters are thinner, the themes are mostly window dressing, and the movie leans on shock and slime where the original used dread and heartbreak. If you’re coming for the same psychological intensity and ideas as The Fly, you’ll probably find this one shallow and a bit directionless, even when it’s trying to be sad. That said, if you just want late-80s practical gore, a sympathetic lead performance, and some nasty lab-horror set pieces, it can still scratch that itch—just don’t expect it to linger in your head for the right reasons.
