Director Michael Ritchie keeps the vibe light on its feet even when the plot turns criminal, mixing fish-out-of-water comedy with a genuinely engaging whodunit and a sly streak of satire that takes pointed aim at local power brokers and televangelist theatrics. The supporting cast, especially Hal Holbrook and a scene-stealing R. Lee Ermey, gives the movie a colorful texture that makes the whole place feel oddly alive, even as Fletch keeps stepping on landmines.
