Family Business (1989)

Family Business is a rare kind of crime comedy: a caper movie that actually cares about the people pulling the job, and it’s elevated by Sidney Lumet’s sure-handed feel for messy families and moral consequences. Sean Connery swaggers through the film with roguish, grandfatherly mischief, Dustin Hoffman brings a twitchy, lived-in anxiety to the son trying to go straight, and Matthew Broderick gives the grandson a bright, combustible restlessness that makes the generational tug-of-war feel real. The vibe is New York streetwise and warmly funny, but with an undercurrent of regret and hard choices that keeps the laughs from turning weightless. It won’t be for everyone—there’s heavy profanity and the story takes its time building character before the caper sparks—but if you like crime films with heart, this one sneaks up on you.

Family Business clearly wants to be a witty three-generation crime caper with a serious father-son morality play underneath, and on paper that’s a terrific setup for Lumet and this cast. The problem is it never fully commits to either lane, so the tone wobbles between light banter and heavy drama, and the pacing can feel oddly sluggish for a movie about a big “caper.” Connery, Hoffman, and Broderick are all watchable, but the script often seems more impressed with having them in the same room than it is interested in giving the story a sharp direction or a satisfying payoff. If you’re hoping for a tight heist film or a deeply moving family drama, this may leave you impatient; if you’re happy to spend time with three strong actors in a messy, talky crime-family hybrid, you’ll get some mileage out of it.
