Criminal Law (1989)

Criminal Law is the kind of slick, morally thorny thriller that grabs you by the lapels and asks how far you’d go to win—then dares you to look away. Gary Oldman is electric as a hotshot Boston attorney whose swagger starts to curdle into self-disgust, while Kevin Bacon plays his wealthy client with an unnerving ambiguity that keeps every scene humming with danger. Director Martin Campbell keeps the pacing sharp and the atmosphere sweaty and nocturnal, mixing courtroom gamesmanship with bursts of tense, well-staged action and a charged romantic undercurrent. It’s not for viewers who need their legal dramas tidy or their characters likable, but if you want a dark cat-and-mouse story powered by two actors going for broke, it’s a gripping, under-sung ride.

Criminal Law is aiming for a slick, morally messy legal thriller where the lawyer and the accused are locked in a psychological chess match, and you can feel it straining to be sexy, smart, and sinister all at once. Still, Gary Oldman and Kevin Bacon bring enough intensity to make certain scenes crackle, so if you’re in the mood for pulpy late-80s thriller vibes and can forgive a lot of nonsense, there’s some watchable heat here.
