Chances Are (1989)

Chances Are has the kind of high-concept romantic magic Hollywood doesn’t attempt much anymore: a whimsical, fate-tangled premise that somehow lands as genuinely sweet rather than merely gimmicky. It’s buoyed by a light, witty tone and an ensemble that clicks, with Robert Downey Jr. bringing an irresistible charisma that makes the film’s emotional turns feel earned instead of forced. The movie floats between comedy and romance with a gentle, old-fashioned glow, occasionally sneaking up on you with surprising tenderness.
