Casualties of War (1989)

Casualties of War is one of those war films that refuses the comfort of heroics and instead stares straight into the moral wreckage conflict can create, and Brian De Palma directs it with a fierce, controlled intensity that doesn’t let you look away. Michael J. Fox delivers a quietly devastating performance as a man trying to hold onto decency when his own squad becomes the enemy, while Sean Penn radiates a frightening authority that makes the film’s pressure feel inescapable. The vibe is grim, intimate, and relentlessly human—less about battles than about conscience, complicity, and the terrible cost of staying silent. It’s absolutely not for everyone, given its disturbing subject matter and brutality, but if you can handle a punishing watch in exchange for something honest, urgent, and powerfully acted, it’s a film that stays with you.

Casualties of War is trying to be a moral gut-punch about how war corrodes ordinary people, and Brian De Palma doesn’t flinch from the ugliness of that premise. The problem is that for all its harrowing subject matter, it can feel oddly conventional and even a bit sanitized in its storytelling beats, like it’s following a familiar courtroom-and-conscience template rather than fully earning its outrage. It’s also a grim, punishing watch with sexual violence at its center, so if you’re not up for sustained cruelty and helplessness, this will feel less “important” than simply miserable. That said, Michael J. Fox brings sincere decency to the role and Sean Penn is convincingly volatile, so if you can handle the content, the performances and intent may still land.
