Always (1989)

Always is Steven Spielberg in a gentler, more intimate mode, taking a high-concept fantasy and grounding it in the soot-and-sunlight reality of aerial firefighting, where courage looks ordinary until it suddenly doesn’t. The film has an easygoing charm that sneaks up on you: Richard Dreyfuss brings rueful warmth, Holly Hunter gives the romance real ache and grit, and John Goodman adds the kind of lived-in camaraderie that makes this world feel welcoming. Its vibe is tender, a little silly in a storybook way, and quietly moving as it circles themes of love, letting go, and the strange ways people keep each other brave. If you want edge-of-your-seat spectacle or a hard-nosed drama, this may feel too casual and whimsical—but if you’re open to a likable, heartfelt fable with smoke, sky, and a big soft spot for humans being human, it’s an easy yes.

The problem is it often plays more like a soft-focus remake-by-numbers: sweet intentions, but the romance can feel strangely weightless and the pacing drifts into long stretches where not much lands emotionally. If you’re hoping for the propulsive tension of a disaster film or the gut-punch intimacy of a great love story, this may leave you politely unmoved. Still, the flying sequences have a warm, classical sheen, and the cast is likable enough to carry you through if you’re in the mood for something earnest and undemanding.
