Willow (1988)

Willow is the kind of earnest, big-hearted fantasy adventure they don’t really make anymore: a sweeping quest with real physical craftsmanship, playful magic, and a sense of wonder that feels hand-built rather than manufactured. Ron Howard keeps the story moving with a storyteller’s clarity, letting the visuals and effects do their old-school showmanship while the humor sneaks in at just the right moments. Warwick Davis gives the film its soul as an unlikely hero discovering his courage, and Val Kilmer’s Madmartigan brings a roguish spark that turns scenes into pure entertainment without tipping into parody. It’s not the darkest or most intricate fantasy on the shelf, but if you want a rousing, crowd-pleasing ride with charm to spare, Willow delivers.

Willow is clearly trying to deliver a classic, crowd-pleasing fairy-tale quest with big-hearted heroism, weird creatures, and that Lucas-era sense of mythic destiny. The problem is it often feels like a grab bag of better fantasy stories stitched together, with uneven pacing and a tone that wobbles between earnest adventure and broad comedy just when you want it to land emotionally. If you need tight storytelling, consistent world-building, or modern effects that hold up under scrutiny, this may test your patience. Still, Warwick Davis is genuinely likable, Val Kilmer brings the swagger and humor the movie badly needs, and if you’re in the mood for an ’80s fantasy comfort watch with some memorable set pieces, it can be a fun enough ride.
