Waxwork (1988)

Waxwork is the kind of midnight movie that feels like it was built by horror fans for horror fans: a gleefully twisted funhouse where every hallway promises a new monster, a new mood, and a new punchline delivered with a straight face. Anthony Hickox turns a killer premise into an anthology-like sprint through classic horror iconography, packing the film with rubbery creatures, lurid atmosphere, and a surprisingly sharp sense of wit that keeps the bloodshed buoyant rather than grim. It’s messy in the best way—more enthusiastic than polished—like flipping through a forbidden comic book where the panels occasionally spray gore. If you’re squeamish about graphic violence or put off by nudity and sleazy undertones, it may not be your ride, but if you want a spirited, creature-stuffed horror-comedy that never stops trying to entertain you, Waxwork is a wickedly good time.

Waxwork is clearly trying to be a cheeky horror theme-park ride, hopping from classic monster set-piece to classic monster set-piece with a wink and a bucket of blood. The problem is it’s a pretty uneven mash-up: the tone swings between goofy and nasty, the story feels stitched together from familiar bits, and the effects and acting can look more enthusiastic than convincing. If you need your horror-comedy to be clever, coherent, or remotely believable, this will likely feel like a noisy B-movie that mistakes gore and nudity for momentum. But if you’re in the mood for late-’80s schlock, practical-effects splatter, and a rapid-fire parade of genre homages, it delivers that kind of junk-food fun.
