Walker (1987)

Walker is special because it treats history like a live wire: Alex Cox turns a 19th-century adventure into a darkly funny, fiercely political fever dream that feels uncomfortably present-tense without ever needing to preach. Ed Harris anchors the film with a riveting, increasingly unhinged charisma, while the movie’s wit and lyricism keep slipping in through the cracks of its anger, making the whole thing feel both reckless and precise. The vibe is part Western, part satirical nightmare—bold anachronisms and nerveful choices that dare you to connect the dots as the story tightens around its own ugly logic. It’s violent and intentionally abrasive, so it won’t be for everyone, but if you’re drawn to audacious cinema that swings hard and means it, Walker lands like a punch you’ll still be thinking about days later.

Walker is clearly trying to be a savage, anachronistic satire of American imperial ambition, using a real 19th-century filibuster story to comment on modern U.S. interventions. The problem is that Alex Cox’s intentionally jarring tone can feel less like sharp provocation and more like a messy, shapeless series of episodes, so if you’re hoping for a coherent historical drama or a satisfying Western arc, you may just end up irritated. Ed Harris commits hard and there are flashes of biting ideas and striking imagery, but the film often plays as perplexing rather than powerful, with characters and scenes that seem to exist more to make a point than to build drama.
