Sunset (1988)

Sunset is a wonderfully oddball Hollywood cocktail: a backstage whodunit stirred with Western mythmaking, poured over the glitter of the 1929 Academy Awards, and finished with Blake Edwards’ wry sense that show business is just another kind of frontier. The real pleasure is watching James Garner’s Wyatt Earp carry quiet authority through a town that runs on illusion, while Bruce Willis brings movie-star spark as Tom Mix, the “reel” hero suddenly forced to deal in real bullets and real consequences. Edwards and his team dress the era with loving period detail—studios, gangsters, brothels, and backlot bravado—so the mystery feels like it’s unfolding inside a living postcard from the end of silent-film innocence. It’s not the tightest thriller you’ll ever see, but if you like your crime stories with charm, old-Hollywood atmosphere, and two legends trading glances across the line between myth and reality, it’s an easy picture to root for.

Sunset wants to be a clever, old-Hollywood mashup where the “real” Wyatt Earp and the “reel” Tom Mix stumble into a murder mystery amid studio politics and gangster grime, and on paper that’s a terrific hook. In practice, it often feels like two different movies fighting for control—part spoof, part noir-ish thriller—so the tone wobbles, the pacing drags, and the central mystery never becomes as gripping as it needs to be. James Garner brings a steady, likable presence and a few scenes have that Blake Edwards polish, but the humor can land flat and the drama doesn’t hit with much conviction. If you’re expecting a tight whodunit or a satisfying Western thriller, you’ll likely be frustrated; if you’re content with a mildly amusing, odd-couple curiosity carried mostly by Garner’s charm, you might get by.
