Short Circuit 2 (1988)

Short Circuit 2 has that rare sequel spark: it takes a lovable concept and gives it a bigger heart, a sharper sense of humor, and a city-sized playground that lets Johnny 5’s curiosity feel genuinely infectious. The movie glides between breezy, crowd-pleasing comedy and surprisingly sincere emotion, finding real warmth in its friendships and in the idea that being “alive” is something you choose through empathy and courage. Its villains are broad enough for family fun, but the stakes feel real, especially when the story asks you to worry about a character made of metal as if he had a pulse. It’s not for everyone if you’re sensitive to a later stretch of rough, extended robot peril, but if you want an ’80s crowd-pleaser with charm, laughs, and an unexpectedly tender core, this one earns your time.

Short Circuit 2 wants to be a big-hearted, fish-out-of-water city adventure where Johnny 5’s innocence collides with human greed, and it does deliver a few genuinely sweet moments and playful robot gags. The problem is it leans hard into cutesy, formula comedy and syrupy sentiment, so if you’re not already attached to Johnny 5, a lot of it can feel like noisy busywork with a predictable crime plot. It also swings abruptly into a surprisingly harsh, drawn-out “hurt the mascot” stretch near the end that may be upsetting for kids and just manipulative for adults. If you’re in the mood for simple late-’80s family comfort with an endearing robot and don’t mind the corn, it’s fine; if you want sharper sci-fi, smarter comedy, or anything subtle, you’ll likely find it glib and exhausting.
