Prime Evil (1988)

Prime Evil is the kind of scrappy late-’80s horror-thriller that feels like you stumbled onto a forbidden VHS after midnight: grimy Manhattan atmosphere, a pulpy occult hook, and a monastery setting that makes the whole thing deliciously wrong from the start. It leans hard into exploitation-movie bravado, but that’s part of the charm—there’s a “trash-gold” energy to its shocks and twists, and the occasional burst of committed acting (especially from its villain) gives the madness a surprising backbone. The vibe is sleazy, eerie, and knowingly over-the-top, with enough mystery to keep you leaning forward even when you’re laughing at the sheer audacity. Prime Evil is clearly trying to mash together satanic panic thrills, urban mystery, and monastery creepiness into a gritty Manhattan horror story. The problem is it’s put together with the clarity and craft of a first draft: the plot wanders into nonsense, the pacing drags, and the performances rarely sell the menace it’s aiming for. It also leans on gratuitous nudity to create “edge” instead of building real tension, which makes the whole thing feel more amateurish than alarming. If you enjoy bargain-bin ’80s exploitation oddities for their unintentional comedy and sleaze-factor curiosity, you might find some value here—but if you want coherent storytelling, atmosphere, or genuine scares, this probably isn’t worth your time.
