Phantasm II (1988)

Phantasm II is that rare sequel that doesn’t just repeat the nightmare—it widens it, turning Coscarelli’s fever-dream mythology into a lean, road-movie hunt where every deserted town and graveyard feels like it’s been abandoned by reality itself. It’s louder and more kinetic than the first film, but it keeps the series’ eerie, half-remembered logic, delivering grotesquely stylish set pieces and clever effects that still have the power to jolt you. Angus Scrimm’s Tall Man remains an iconic, calmly menacing presence, while the buddy dynamic between Mike and the endlessly game Reggie gives the mayhem a pulpy, crowd-pleasing momentum. Fair warning: this one is proudly nasty—severe gore, intense chases, and a streak of weird sexuality—so if you want clean, tasteful horror, look elsewhere; if you want imaginative, nightmarish entertainment that swings for the fences, this is a blast.

Phantasm II is clearly trying to turn the first film’s eerie, dream-logic nightmare into a louder, more straightforward road-movie sequel, with bigger action beats, more weapons, and a clearer “hunt the Tall Man” mission. The problem is that the story still lurches around like a bad dream, only now it’s packed with severe gore and set-piece mayhem that can feel more like noisy escalation than meaningful horror. If you loved the original for its weird, unsettling mood, this one may disappoint by trading atmosphere for blunt effects and a more conventional sequel engine, and the acting and logic won’t rescue it. On the other hand, Angus Scrimm remains a terrific villain presence, and if you want scrappy late-80s horror-action with grisly sphere kills and a relentless pace, it does deliver that in spades.
