Oliver & Company (1988)

Oliver & Company is one of Disney’s most purely entertaining late-’80s surprises: a bright, streetwise spin on Dickens that turns New York City into a neon playground of scrappy charm and big-hearted emotion. The movie moves with the bounce of a musical comedy, powered by catchy songs, punchy humor, and a celebrity voice cast that actually adds personality—Billy Joel’s Dodger, in particular, gives the film its swagger and warmth. Beneath the jokes and jazzy energy, it’s a sincere story about finding your people when you start with nothing, and it earns its sweetness without getting syrupy. Fair warning: it does flirt with real peril and a surprisingly intense finale for younger kids, but if you want a family film with momentum, heart, and a soundtrack that sticks, this one’s easy to root for.

Oliver & Company is clearly trying to modernize Oliver Twist into a scrappy, streetwise New York adventure with catchy songs and a lovable underdog vibe. The problem is it often feels like Disney on autopilot: the story hits familiar beats, the emotional moments don’t land as hard as they’re aiming for, and the animation can look a bit flat compared to the studio’s stronger work. If you’re expecting the richness and punch of peak-era Disney, you may find it lightweight and a little too predictable. Still, Billy Joel’s Dodger brings genuine charm, the dog sidekicks have fun energy, and the darker villain/peril elements might keep older kids engaged.
