For Keeps (1988)

For Keeps has a rare gift: it treats teenage romance and sudden parenthood not as a punchline or a lecture, but as a lived-in, messy, tender stretch of life where every choice costs something. Molly Ringwald brings a clear-eyed warmth to Darcy, and Randall Batinkoff matches her with a gentle sincerity, so the relationship feels less like movie drama and more like two young people trying—sometimes failing—to grow up in real time. Director John G. Avildsen keeps the tone grounded and humane, letting small domestic moments carry as much weight as the bigger blowups, and the result is a comedy-drama with real charm and bruised honesty. It won’t be for everyone if you want a breezy rom-com or if the themes of pregnancy and family pressure hit too close to home, but if you’re in the mood for something heartfelt and recognizably human, it’s an easy film to root for.

For Keeps wants to be a sincere, mainstream look at teen pregnancy and the grown-up consequences of “doing the right thing,” mixing romance, comedy, and hard reality in one package. The problem is it plays a bit too safe: the direction and script lean into familiar beats, the pacing drags through repeated arguments and setbacks, and the big issues get smoothed into a conventional, sometimes mawkish drama rather than something truly sharp or challenging. Molly Ringwald is likable and does what she can with the material, and there are a few honest moments about stress, money, and postpartum emotions that land. If you’re expecting a bold social drama or a genuinely funny rom-com, this may feel tame and preachy, but if you want an easy, old-school cautionary tale with a soft heart, it might be passable.
