D.O.A. (1988) grabs you by the lapels with one of those deliciously pulpy, instantly believable hooks: a man walks into a police station to report his own murder, and the clock starts ticking. What makes it special is how it marries that high-concept urgency to a slick, neon-noir style and a surprisingly literate, ironic bite—like a hardboiled thriller that’s read a few good books and knows it. Dennis Quaid sells the panic and the stubborn, bruised intelligence of a professor in free fall, while Meg Ryan brings a bright, steady warmth that keeps the movie from turning into pure despair. It’s not for viewers allergic to ’80s attitude, smoking, and sharp language, but if you want a fast, stylish mystery with real momentum and a wicked sense of fate, it’s an easy recommendation.
